Enjoy the journey
I love a plan! And especially at the moment, like many, I enjoy planning the best post lockdown knees up. And there is nothing wrong with looking forward but not to the detriment of enjoying the moments in the right now.
The very insightful Eleanor Roosevelt reminds us that today is a gift, thus why it is indeed called the present but in these unsettling and strange times it can be difficult to stay in the now. But even in the darkest of nows there is always something to enjoy.
Literally everywhere.
Look up at the sky, it’s immense and amazing.
In your child’s laughter, put your phone down a moment and listen.
In the morning coldness, breathe it in.
No planning required, just a presentness that escapes us when we spend our time chasing happiness with the next destination; the new car, revamped kitchen, the holiday in the sun or post covid party. But ever noticed how ‘achieving’ one want leads tends to lead onto another want…. Straight onto the next destination.
Scrolling on social media provides the perfect distraction from being present and focuses us on what others have, what we don’t have, what we want. So if you have made it this point of reading, put your phone down, stop planning and spend 10 minutes in the right here and now. Feel it, hear it, smell it, see it, taste it and enjoy it for it’s the journey not the destination that counts.
